USA Administration Proof Peso 1905 PR67+ PCGS, Philadelphia
mint, KM168, Allen-16.05. A breathtaking rendition of this
sought-after date in the Filipino Peso series, nearly capping out
the PCGS census but for a single PR68 certified there. The toning
here takes the cake and is among the most stunning this cataloger
has witnessed, with a sumptuous gradient of caramel to seafoam
green that adorns the devices. This, coupled with a near-complete
paucity of distracting wisps to confirm the PCGS conditional
superiority, coalesce into one of the finest Proof Pesos of the
USPI we've yet handled.The Philadelphia Mint struck proof Philippines Pesos each year between 1903 to 1908. The first two years have the highest mintages, probably due to greater collector interest at the birth of the issue. The 1905 production was only 471 pieces, a great reduction from the 1903 emission of 2,558 Pesos. Philadelphia also struck Pesos for commerce in 1903 and 1904, but the 1905 to 1908 issues are proof-only years. The San Francisco Mint was less distant from the Philippines, and the logical facility for business production prior to the 1920 opening of the Manila Mint.
