Republic gold Specimen Pattern 5 Zlotych 1925-(w) SP63 PCGS,
Warsaw mint, KM-Y17.3a, Parchimowicz-P139g. 81 Pearls. Arrow
mintmark by date. 4th Anniversary of the Adoption of the March
Constitution. This selection represents one of the crown jewels of
20th Century Polish numismatics; the famed gold Pattern of the
"Constitution" 5 Zlotych. The standard issue of this type, struck
in silver, is rare and widely desirable in it's own right, but the
few gold Patterns known to have been struck are in a league of
their own, numismatically speaking. According to Parchimowicz,
there were a total of no more than four "Constitution" 5 Zlotych
struck in gold, comprised of 3 different varieties; an 81 pearl
border, a 100 pearl border, and two 100 pearl border pieces with
raised initials "SW", "WG", and the date "3/V". This is that 81
pearl gold specimen, presumed unique in this particular variety,
and incredibly important as such.The present specimen is thought to be the only one of the four gold "Constitution" examples mentioned by Parchimowicz to have ever appeared at public auction before, leading many to believe it is the only of it's kind in private hands. This piece's most noteworthy pedigree is it's King Farouk Collection provenance, purchased out of Sotheby's London in 1954 when the "Palace Collection of Egypt" was sold by Order of the Egyptian Government (pictured on plate XX of the original Sotheby's catalog). The surfaces of this piece are clearly of a specimen nature, brimming with satin luster and possessing a sheen of golden resplendence that is extraordinary. Though significant die polish lines occupy much of this coin's fields, the presence of additional wispy hairlines is likely the reason this specimen tops out at the Choice threshold. A legendary item of Polish numismatic origin that has not hit the auction block in over 15 years, sure to create great fanfare on this occasion.
