Description

1893 50C Half Dollar PR67 NGC. After a huge initial production of 1,245 proofs in 1892, the mintage of proof half dollars dropped in 1893 to a more realistic 792 pieces. This is an intriguing coin, not only for the exceptional preservation of the surfaces but also for the unique arrangement of color on each side. Both obverse and reverse have an off-center circle of brilliance that is surrounded by cobalt-blue and russet colors. It truly is a coin that needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. If one can see through the toning, it is readily apparent that cameo contrast is present between the fields and devices on each side. A magnificent proof Barber half. Census: 18 in 67, 3 finer (3/15).(Registry values: N4719)
