Description

Well Struck 1895 Gem Proof Half Dollar

1895 50C PR65 NGC. Mint records indicate that 880 proof half dollars were struck in 1895. Walter Breen says in his 1977 proof Encyclopedia that "The majority of these have been poorly cleaned." The Gem offered in this lot yields no evidence of cleaning. Some wispy lines on Liberty's cheek and neck are die polish lines, not hairlines. A thin veneer of gold color is noted under magnification, and a well executed strike imparts nice delineation to the design elements.
