Description

1897 Barber Half Dollar, PR68
Undesignated Cameo Contrast
Incredible Quality, Ex: Childs

1897 50C PR68 PCGS. CAC. Ex: The Childs Collection. This is a spectacular piece, not only in terms of technical superiority, but also in regards to its exceptional aesthetic appeal. The devices showcase thick, mint-fresh frost and deliver substantial, undesignated contrast with the profoundly deep mirroring in the fields. The design elements are fully executed and the overall eye appeal is staggering, with a glaze of amber-gold toning over each side. This piece is arguably one of the hallmarks of the Gardner Collection of Barber halves.

Population Data (4/15): This PR68 coin is tied for finest non-Cameo with three others at PCGS and seven at NGC.

Heritage Commentary: This remarkable proof condition rarity traces its origin to the legendary Walter H. Childs Collection, offered by Bowers and Merena in 1999. Childs is believed to have purchased the coin directly from the Mint in 1897, when the elder Childs was actively assembling his collection. This is only the second time this incredible coin has ever been offered for sale, at auction or otherwise, in its more than a century of existence, and the winning bidder here will be only the second owner of the coin since it left the hands of the Childs family more than 15 years ago.

Provenance: Believed to have been purchased directly from the Mint by Walter H. Childs; Walter H. Childs Collection (Bowers and Merena, 8/1999), lot 401.(Registry values: N4719)
