Exquisite 1903 Half Dollar, PR68

1903 50C PR68 NGC. Though the Barber design proved unpopular with contemporary numismatists, enough collectors purchased proof sets that specimens in typical grades are available and comparably affordable today. An extraordinary survivor such as the present piece, however, is another story. While the obverse shows the lack of contrast that marks most of the early 20th century silver proof issues, the reverse offers a modicum of contrast. Wisps of gold and champagne patina grace the margins, while the centers are essentially untoned. Even under magnification, the minuscule flaws that preclude a perfect grade are difficult to see. Of the 755 specimens struck, this wonderful example ranks among the finest; neither NGC nor PCGS has certified a numerically finer representative, with just seven pieces awarded a grade of MS68 between both services (8/07).(Registry values: N4719)
