Description

1911 Barber Half Dollar, PR68 Cameo
Brilliant Proof, Tied for Finest

1911 50C PR68 Cameo NGC. Ex: Grand Teton Collection. This exceptional Superb Gem proof is tied with one other coin as the finest Cameo example at NGC (3/25). Brilliant fields are intensely reflective and generate impressive field-to-device contrast with rich, frosty devices dazzling in a cartwheel effect. Generally well-struck, there is a very faint softness to the details on the right side of the shield and eagle's talons, which is consistent with the series and only visible under magnification. The Cameo designation and the overall dynamic eye appeal of this remarkable piece justify the well-deserved high-end grade.

Most Cameo examples of the 1911 proof half dollar that appear at auction grade no finer than PR66, and we have seen only a handful of individual coins finer in this contrast category. We last handled the other PR68 Cameo NGC coin in our April 2011 Central States Signature. This piece represents a fresh opportunity for the most advanced Registry Set collector. Census: 2 in 68 Cameo, 0 finer (3/25).(Registry values: N7079)
