Extraordinary 1892 Barber Quarter, Important PR69 Deep Cameo Preservation

1892 25C PR69 Deep Cameo NGC. Due to its status as a first-year issue, one would expect that the proof 1892 has survived in significant enough numbers to satisfy demand from today's type collectors. Furthermore, one might assume that a decent number of high grade coins are extant. Both of these statements are true, but they cannot even begin to prepare one for the proof 1892 Quarter that we are offering in this lot. This coin must have been removed from the press just after striking and then squirreled away in one or more collections for the last 110 years. There is not a single hairline or contact mark on either side, and both sides are equally devoid of toning. The absence of patina allows full appreciation of the heavily frosted devices and deep, watery fields. Of course, the strike is full, and the only mentionable pedigree marker is a tiny, inconspicuous spot of haziness in the reverse field between the eagle's right (facing) wing and the scroll on which E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed. A coin that must be seen to be fully appreciated.
