    Unimprovable, Near-Perfect 1893 Quarter, Proof 69 ★ NGC

1893 25C PR69 ★ NGC. In 1893, the World's Columbian Exposition threw its doors open to the public a year late, although an opening ceremony had been held in autumn, 1892. The Treasury Department had a display there including coins from the Mint Cabinet transported to Chicago from Philadelphia. It is thought that proof coins were offered for sale, but many of these were probably dated 1892. The Exposition was a platform of numismatic activity with J.W. Scott setting up two concessions with medals struck for visitors at the Treasury Department exhibit, and with dozens of different varieties, tokens, badges, and medals being sold by numerous vendors. This was the second of the truly great American world's fairs, the first being the 1876 Centennial Exposition. Commemorative coinage was first introduced with the Isabella Quarter, and the more numerous 1892 and 1893 Columbian Half Dollars.
Of the 792 proof Quarters coined in 1893, this is perhaps the finest extant example. The obverse features concentric circular toning with a thick band of bright turquoise-blue, bordered with magenta, then antique-gold, and on to a nearly brilliant center. The reverse is mostly brilliant with a peripheral ring of deep amber and gunmetal-blue color. The fields are deeply mirrored and sparkle under the color. One microscopic indention is mentioned on Liberty's upper cheek between her eye and hairline. This is only designated for future pedigree purposes of this amazing coin.(#5679) (Registry values: N7079)
