    1897 Quarter, Beautiful PR68
    Ex: Clapp-Eliasberg

1897 25C PR68 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. An outstanding Superb Gem proof with tack-sharp detail throughout the relief elements and deep, glassy fields that provide modest cameo contrast on the obverse. The central regions show warm champagne-gold toning that deepens to amber, blue, and mint-green around the peripheries.

Population Data (9/15): The Eliasberg coin is one of only six PR68 coins at NGC (one PR68+ ) with none finer; PCGS shows two in this grade and none finer.

Heritage Commentary: This impressive coin boasts not only stellar preservation and eye appeal, but also an impressive pedigree of high-profile collections that can be traced all the way back to when the coin was purchased from the Mint by the elder John Clapp in late 1897. Since its striking, this magnificent proof has resided in only three different collections, with the sole exception of a brief three-year gap between the sale of the Eliasberg Collection in 1997, and when Eugene H. Gardner acquired it from the August 2000 Bowers and Merena sale.

Provenance: Acquired directly from the Mint by J.M. Clapp (11/1897); John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate, to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (1942); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1561; ANA Sale of the Millennium (Bowers and Merena, 8/2000), lot 1323.(Registry values: N4719)
