    1898 Quarter, PR66 Ultra Cameo
    Overt Originality

1898 25C PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. A speckling of blue and russet-red toning embellishes the frosted elements of this richly contrasted, mirrored proof quarter. Lemon-gold toning blankets the reflective surfaces and provides a lightly-hued base for the deeper toning accents. The 1898 proof issue is represented by a large number of high-end, high-contrast proofs -- the Mint finally perfected the technique for producing deeply mirrored fields against thickly frosted devices, making the late 1890s proofs among the most sought-after among all proof issues. This example is overtly original and pleasing for those who prefer some (but not too much) toning over the fully struck surfaces. Census: 6 in 66 Ultra Cameo, 42 finer (2/15).(Registry values: N2998)
