    Description

1898-S PR 63. Branch Mint Proof. An exciting coin, to date this is the only 1898-S quarter even rumored to exist in the proof format. The fields have an extraordinary depth of mirrored reflectivity. The mirror-like fields were created by vigorous die polishing, the traces of which are amply evident on each side. Light die cracks are seen from star 13 and extend onto the bottom of the truncation of Liberty's neck. Fully struck on each side, there are a few small contact marks noted in the center of the cheek of Liberty which account for the grade.
The ultimate authority on proof coinage, Walter Breen, made his pronouncement on this piece ten years ago. The letter of authentication, that accompanies the lot, is written on F.C.I. letterhead and dated August 2, 1985. It reads: "This certifies that I have examined the accompanying coin and that I unhesitatingly declare it a genuine 1898-S proof quarter dollar. It is from brilliantly polished dies; the planchet was polished before striking. It shows unmistakable evidence of two blows from the dies, primarily on reverse (eagle, arrows, letters). These three criteria, taken together, justify the status of Proof, though the piece was carelessly made and carelessly handled by some later holder. This is the first proof reported for this date from the San Francisco Mint."
