1911 25C PR69 Deep Cameo PCGS. Ex: Simpson. The Simpson coin is the sole finest proof 1911 Barber quarter, tied with just three other coins for finest proof Barber quarter of any date at PCGS -- the ultimate type coin, Registry candidate, and date representative. Further compounding the importance of this offering is the rarity of Deep Cameo 1911 proof quarters overall. PCGS reports only eight such coins in all grades. We have previously handled a Deep Cameo example on only 12 occasions, the most recent of which was a PR67 Deep Cameo in our March 2013 Dallas Signature. To our knowledge, only two Deep Cameos have appeared at auction with any firm since then -- one a PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC coin in a January 2014 Goldberg sale, the other a PR68 Deep Cameo PCGS CAC coin in Legend's March 2019 auction. That latter piece currently holds the auction record for the issue of $47,000, although the stability of that record has never been tested by the Simpson PR69 Deep Cameo specimen, which is appearing at auction for the first time here.

This piece redefines the concept of conditional rarity within the Barber quarter proof series. And, it combines that rarity with a degree of eye appeal that warrants its classification as finest known. Stunning, mercury-like fields glimmer around frosty, razor-sharp devices. Field-device contrast leaves nothing to the imagination. Warm rose-gold toning delicately tints the interiors, ceding to violet and blue slivers around the outer peripheries. Holding this coin in-hand, one cannot even begin to question its lofty -- and well deserved -- numeric and contrast classifications.
