Desirable 1843 B-1a Original Half Cent, PR581843 1/2 C Original PR58 NGC. B-1a, R.6. Two different die states are described in Breen's Half Cent Encyclopedia for the Large Berries proofs, and classified as Originals or Series VII Restrikes depending on the die state, early or late respectively. The only difference between the die states involves short die file marks near stars 2 and 12, either bold or faint. Breen also discusses a early and late reverse states, and refers the reader to page 424 of his reference, but page 424 describes an entirely different die.
This piece appears to be an earlier die state with bold obverse file marks. The coin is boldly struck with dark brown surfaces, slightly lighter on the reverse. The fields are slightly reflective, and the overall appearance is pleasing. EAC PR55.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 223E, PCGS# 1266)
