    1846 Half Cent, PR64 Brown
    Original, Large Berries, B-1

1846 1/2 C Original B-1, R.6, PR64 Brown PCGS. CAC. The B-1 Original half cent is easily identified by the Large Berries reverse and the unusual mix of numerals in the date, which was either hand engraved (Walter Breen) or had the numerals individually punched in (Q. David Bowers), rather than logotyped. In any case, the date is quite distinctive and markedly different from that seen on half cents of any of the surrounding years. The 1 has a peaked, smoothly curved top, the 8 has a misshapen fancy style, and the 4 is slightly tall, with a plain crossbar. The well-preserved surfaces of this attractive Choice specimen display an iridescent mix of mahogany brown and lilac toning, with a few subtle hints of original red. The design elements are sharply detailed throughout and the fields show traces of reflectivity, somewhat dimmed by the toning. Housed in an old green label holder. Population: 4 in 64 (1 in 64+) Brown, 0 finer. CAC: 2 in 64, 0 finer (8/16).(Registry values: P4)
