1857 B-2 Half Cent, PR64 Red and Brown
1857 1/2 C PR64 Red and Brown NGC. B-2, R.4. Our consignor
reports a weight of 86.26 grains (5.59 grams) that identifies this
as an example of Series II, according to Walter Breen in his
Half Cent Encyclopedia. The reverse has the doubled T in
CENT, first appearing on the 1856 B-3 proof half cents, next on the
1857 B-2 proofs, and later on all of the First Restrike half cents
with dates of 1840 to 1849 and 1852.
Breen's Series II
Breen identified proof examples from this die pair as "Originals" with a few dozen known, "Series I" coins with about a dozen known, and "Series II" coins with just four in collectors' hands.
This is a mostly lustrous coin with pink-red luster and mottled medium brown patina. The devices are sharply struck and the fields reveal modest reflectivity at a few angles. A carbon spot at 5 o'clock on the obverse rim is the only mentionable distraction. MRB PR63.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 26ZY, PCGS# 1333)
