Description
Gem Proof 1831 Capped Bust Dime, JR-2
Deeply Reflective and Pinpoint-Sharp
1831 10C PR65 NGC. JR-2. Although any proof Capped Bust dime
is a truly rare coin, examples of the proof 1831 are known struck
from both the JR-2 and JR-4 die combinations. The present Gem 1831
certified by NGC is conditionally rarer still, a grade infrequently
seen even on circulation strikes. The JR-2 obverse shows star 7
quite close to the cap -- closer than on the JR-4 -- and pointing
to the center of Liberty's headband. On the reverse, the upper
serif of the D in UNITED shows recutting to the left, and recutting
also show in some of the vertical lines in the shield. The fields on this coin are deeply reflective and show pinpoint sharpness on the obverse, while the reverse displays just a bit of softness on the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers. A case could be made for cameo contrast, but just a bit too much gray-russet toning appears on each side, especially around the margins. NGC's Census Report shows six 1831 dime submissions in PR65 with two finer (9/12).
