Description
1835 JR-1 Capped Bust Dime, PR66
Probably Unique as a Proof
1835 10C PR66 NGC. JR-1, R.1, Likely Unique as a Proof. When
Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof
Coins was published in 1977, the author described four
different varieties of 1835 dimes known to him in proof format. In
today's notation, those varieties were JR-4, JR-5, JR-8, and JR-9.
A few years after Breen's work was published, the authors of
Early United States Dimes 1796-1837 reported that only JR-4
was known to them in proof. The present 1835 dime is unquestionably
a proof, but it is not JR-4, nor is it any of the other varieties
that Breen reported.Every proof 1835 dime in our past auctions and in those of our competitors over the past couple of decades or longer has been attributed as JR-4. The roster below lists six clearly different coins, along with several other auction appearances that may bring the total surviving population up to 10 or 12 coins. The present specimen is different from any of those and is probably unique as a proof, the only known JR-1 dime in proof format, and it is a Premium Gem. Both sides have fully and deeply mirrored fields around lustrous and boldly detailed devices. The toning is incredible, blending vibrant gold, lavender, and blue.
