1829 Half Dime, PR67, V-3, LM-2
Perhaps Six Known, Tied for Finest

1829 H10C PR67 PCGS. CAC. V-3, LM-2, High R.7 as a proof. A number of proof half dimes (as well as several other denominations in proof format, some of which are offered in this Platinum Night auction) were struck in 1829 in conjunction with the establishment of the Second United States Mint, and the half dime denomination was struck again in this year as well, the first time since the 1805 half dimes. The mintage of business strikes was 1.23 million coins, The close collar was used on the half dime for the first time in 1829. Although several different die pairings are known for the proof 1829 half dimes, the V-3, LM-2 combination is the most "frequently" seen, identified by recutting on the 9 in the date, the C in the denomination, and the C in AMERICA.
We use the term "frequently" advisedly, as the 1829 proof half dimes are rare regardless of die variety. Breen enumerates 18 proofs in his Proof Encyclopedia, struck from seven different die pairings, although the V-2 and V-3 combinations have six proofs each listed. The V-3, LM-2 die variety is recognized by the double dentils at the rim beneath star 1 and faint recutting at the bottom of the 8, with the 1 in the date centered over a space between dentils. The reverse shows three pale gules (three vertical shield lines in each stripe), although that is not a diagnostic, as three different reverse dies show that same trait. The reverse also shows the M above the E in AMERICA, with ER touching -- and that is diagnostic.
The present Superb Gem proof is the single finest certified of the issue, far finer than the Eliasberg V-3, LM-2 piece, described as a PR64. A single NGC proof is also certified PR67. Deep, even proof fields run from rim to rim, with no trace of mint frost. The obverse boasts a moderate cameo appearance. The centers are cherry-red with sea-green margins, save for a couple of odd streaks of brilliance on the obverse. The strike is sharp throughout, as expected.
