Description

PCGS 1829 PR 63. V-7. An unmistakable proof striking, there are only an estimated 20 proofs known of this date. They were apparently struck for two reasons in this year: for the cornerstone of the new mint building on Chestnut and Juniper Streets in Philadelphia, and also to commemorate the use of a close collar--a mechanical improvement that imparted a "mathematical equality" to the coins so struck. In the Breen 1977 reference he states that only one proof half dime is known from the V-7 dies, and that coin is from the Brand Collection, later sold by New Netherlands.
We cannot be certain if this is that piece because he does not mention in which NN sale the Brand coin appeared. This is a distinctive coin, however. If one wished to peruse old New Netherlands catalogs (a worthwhile endeavor in itself) it might be possible to nail down the pedigree of this coin for certain. On the reverse there is a planchet flake out of the field above the left eagle's wing. Surely this would have been mentioned in previous catalog appearances. There are also several other smaller flakes out of the field below the eagle's right wing. Otherwise, the fields are fully mirrored and while a few hairlines are present, the coin overall presents very well and displays rich golden-brown toning over both sides. An important early proof and of the highest order of rarity. Population: 2 in 63, only 1 finer (12/94). (NGC ID# 27D2, PCGS# 4294)

    Weight: 1.35 grams

    Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper
