Description

Originally Patinated Near-Gem 1829 Half Dime Rarity

1829 H10C PR 64 PCGS. V-3, LM-2. In 1829, the Mint struck limited numbers of proofs to place in the cornerstone of the new Mint building on Chestnut and Juniper Streets in Philadelphia and also to commemorate the introduction of the close collar to the coinage process. The present coin's die marriage shows faint recutting on the outside of the upper left loop of the 8 in the date, doubling on the top of the I in UNITED, and remnants of a misplaced O in the reverse field between the second S in STATES and the O in OF. The true rarity of this proof issue should be obvious to even novice collectors when one considers that the 6 known examples of the V-3, LM-2 die marriage (as well as the 6 recorded examples of the V-2, LM-3 variety) constitute the vast majority of extant pieces. One of the V-3, LM-2 specimens is part of the Smithsonian Institution collection and is, therefore, not available to private collectors. This is a beautiful, original specimen whose surfaces show mottled rainbow iridescence beneath a thin veil of russet-gray patina. The fields are bright and glow around the powerfully impressed features. Both sides are essentially smooth and indicative of the numismatic quality that resides at the near-Gem level. For pedigree purposes alone, we call attention to a small horizontal abrasion on Liberty's neck before the curl, a small planchet flake in the right obverse field between Liberty's hair and star 11, and a second small flake in the reverse field beneath the eagle's left (facing) wing. The two major grading services combined report only 18 proof 1829 half dimes of all die varieties and in all grades, 11 of which grade at or above the PR 64 grade level (9/99).
