    1827 O-121 Half Dollar, PR62
    Previously Unrecorded Specimen
    From European Nobility

1827 50C PR62 NGC. O-121, High R.7 as a Proof. The recut A in STATES confirms the variety. A single proof example of O-107 is recorded in the literature, along with five different examples of O-121, including the present specimen. The other four carry higher numerical grades, so the present piece is the most affordable proof 1827 half dollar, and it is a previously unrecorded specimen. A roster of the other proofs is available at lot 5633 of our January 2013 FUN Signature sale. The crisp strike is sufficient to eliminate any doubt about the proof status of this example. Both sides have faintly mirrored fields with myriad hairlines that limit the grade. Light blue and delicate gold peripheral toning frames the devices.
Obtained by a European noble while visiting this country in the middle 19th century and retained by the same family until the present time.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
