Description
1829 Half Dollar, O-108, PR64
The Finest Seen at PCGS
1829 50C PR64 PCGS. O-108, R.8 as a Proof. Gold CAC.
Attributed by die lines between the end of the bust and the edge
(these show only on the early die states), the right side of I in
PLURIBUS centered under the second T of STATES, 5 in the
denomination higher than 0 and tilted to left, C tilted sharply to
left, and the 5 recut at the top.The PCGS website estimates that six to eight 1829 half dollar proofs are known. PCGS has certified a PR62 and a PR64 (the present coin), while NGC has graded two PR63s, two PR65s, a PR66, an SP63 and an SP64.
The mirrored fields of the present offering yield modest contrast with the devices at various angles, somewhat more so on the reverse, and the untoned centers cede to splashes of deep gunmetal-blue, lavender, and orange-gold at the margins. The design features are well-struck, with the stars around the left border slightly stronger than those along the right margin, boldness in the gown and cap folds and most of Liberty's hair, and strong detail on the eagle's wing and neck feathers and horizontal stripes on the shield. The typical softness is noted in the lines of the vertical stripes, the arrow feathers, and the right (facing) claw. Most of the dentilation is bold, and the devices are well centered on the planchet. Both sides are devoid of mentionable contact marks, and just an occasional faint hairline in the fields keeps this piece from full Gem status. We mention a minuscule milling mark in the center of Liberty's neck solely for identification purposes. Housed in a first generation holder. Population: 1 in 64, 0 finer (11/13).
