Description

    1834 Capped Bust Half, PR63
    Rare O-106 Proof
    Ex: "Buddy" Byers

1834 50C PR63 NGC. O-106, R.8 as a proof. In our January 2011 FUN Signature, lot 5332, we presented substantial information regarding the various proof 1834 half dollars that are recognized today. The majority of known proofs are described as O-122 and are the Crushed Lettered Edge (CLE) restrikes. There are five other proofs, considered originals, each from a different die pair and therefore each unique. This example is from the George W. "Buddy" Byers, Jr., Collection that Stack's sold in 2006.

An attractive Select proof, the Byers specimen has slight contrast, insufficient for a Cameo designation. However, it is an attractive piece with deep gunmetal-blue toning and mostly trivial contact marks. A larger mark extends from the left end of the ribbon carrying the motto.
    Ex: Jascha Heifetz (Superior, 10/1989), lot 831; Remick Collection (Stack's, 9/1997), lot 829; Rarities Sale (Bowers and Merena, 1/2000), lot 169; George W. Byers, Jr., Collection (Stack's, 10/2006), lot 1084; Milwaukee Signature (Heritage, 8/2007), lot 1683, realized $25,300. (NGC ID# 26SB, PCGS# 6217)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
