    1836 O-109 Half Dollar, PR64
    The Norweb Specimen

1836 50C Lettered Edge PR64 NGC. O-109, High R.7 as a Proof. Four different varieties of 1836 Lettered Edge half dollars are known in proof format, and each has its special characteristics. O-101 has a tripled dentil over the right side of the final S, O-108 has the 8 punched over a misplaced 3, O-109 has an extra point on star 7, and O-116 had the blundered 50 over 00 denomination. The O-109 die pair offered here is relatively plentiful in circulation strike format, rated R.3, but is extremely rare in proof format with less than a half dozen known. We have examined auction records for the O-109 die marriage and find just four distinct specimens:

PR67 NGC. FUN Signature Sale (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 3189; FUN Signature Sale (Heritage, 1/2013), lot 5641.
PR65 NGC. Randall Collection; Garrett Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 11/1979), lot 328; Superior (1/1990), lot 3551; Bowers and Merena (1/1999), lot 1135; Superior (2/2001), lot 5534.
PR64 NGC. New Netherlands Coin Company (8/16/1954); Norweb Collection (Bowers and Merena, 11/1988), lot 3114. The present specimen.
PR64 NGC. Bowers and Merena (8/1996), lot 130.

This brilliant proof has light silver central areas within a frame of blue and iridescent peripheral toning. Both sides are fully mirrored with satiny devices, creating light cameo contrast. This is a splendid Choice Proof example that Mrs. Norweb purchased from New Netherlands on August 16, 1954. She purchased several coins from New Netherlands on that date while attending the ANA Convention, which was held near her family home in Cleveland, Ohio. (NGC ID# 24GG, PCGS# 6221)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
