1836 Lettered Edge Bust Half, PR67
O-109, Rarely Seen in Proof Format

1836 50C Lettered Edge PR67 NGC. O-109, R.3. The Overton variety is attributed by these diagnostics: the sharp spike on the outer point of star 7; the 183 of the date are even at the bottom, but 3 is lower at the top; the olive stem is entirely over the top of the C in 50 C.; the 5 has a straight top, and the loop is nearly closed; and the I of PLURIBUS is left of the T in STATES.
Our records indicate that the Lettered Edge proof half dollar has made about 30 appearances at public sales over the last 35 years. NGC and PCGS combined have certified 15 specimens; the coin offered here is one of the two finest. An unequivocal proof striking with glassy fields and razor-sharp definition. Liberty's hair and the eagle's feathers are crisply delineated, as are the star centers, with the exception of star 7, which is somewhat soft. The field-to-motif contrast is notable when the coin is tilted beneath a light source, although no contrast is noted on the NGC insert. The obverse is bathed in iridescent gunmetal-blue and lavender patina in the center, and light gold and lavender around the periphery. The reverse center is dominated by a melange of electric-blue, golden-brown, and crimson, while the margins are a bright cobalt-blue and yellow-gold. The surfaces are immaculately preserved, exhibiting no mentionable marks.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 3189, where it brought $109,250.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
