1821 Capped Bust Quarter, B-3, PR65
Five Examples Traced, Only One of This Variety

1821 25C PR65 NGC. B-3, R.7 as a proof. The 1821 Capped Bust
quarter is very rare in proof format, but proof specimens are known
from three different die pairs, classified as Browning 3, 4, and 5
in the leading series references. The present coin represents the
B-3 variety, based on the following diagnostics:1. Star 7 points to the center of Liberty's headband at its front, while another point of star 7 aims at the lower half of a dentil.
2. Star 13 points to the center of a dentil.
3. Clash marks show below Liberty's ear from the shield stripes on the reverse, and in the right obverse field.
4. On the reverse there are rust pits in the area between the leaf and the 2. and the 5 in the denomination is large in comparison to the 2.
We have compiled a roster of the five 1821 proofs known to us below, with a few additional appearances that may or may not represent duplicate citations of the coins in the main roster. This coin is the only 1821 proof struck from the B-3 dies that we can trace today, although Walter Breen mentioned seeing another example in the 1950s. It traces its history to the fabled Norweb Collection, a mark of distinction for any coin. This piece offers splendid, untoned silver-white centers that blend into pink and then steel-blue and violet hues at the rims on each side. The design elements are sharply detailed throughout and the fields are deeply mirrored under the toning. Eye appeal is terrific. Census: 2 in 65, 1 finer (6/15).
