    Description

    1831 C-1, B-1 Half Cent, PR45
    Original, Reverse of 1831-1832

1831 1/2 C C-1, B-1, R.6, PR45 NGC. There has been considerable recent controversy regarding the 1831 half cents. Traditionally called a proof-only issue, although some believe that both proofs and circulation strikes were issued. The number of circulated pieces known is the reason that some suggest circulation strikes were issued. They point to the 2,200 coin reported mintage of half cents in 1831. Others believe that only proofs were coined, following numismatic tradition, and write-off the 2,200-coin mintage as pieces actually dated 1832. This chocolate-brown and steel example has light wear, and no evidence of proof mirrors on either side. Our EAC grade VF35 or PR35.
