Description

    1831 B-2 Half Cent, PR67 Brown
    Reverse of 1836
    Early Die State

1831 1/2 C Reverse of 1836 PR67 Brown PCGS. B-2, R.5. Breen Die State I. Although the obverse is bulged, this early die state shows no evidence of reverse cracks that are found in the later die states. This restrike has the reverse of 1836, also known as the First Restrike. It is far more plentiful than Original or Second Restrike 1831 half cents, and yet, just 30 to 35 pieces are known in all grades. Walter Breen enumerated 26 examples in his Half Cent Encyclopedia, published 29 years ago. PCGS has certified 15 of these in all grades, and the present specimen is the only piece they have called PR67, regardless of color designation (6/12). This lovely Superb Gem has subdued mirrored fields with deep brown and pale blue patina. Our EAC grade PR62.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 2237, PCGS# 1189)
