    1903 McKinley Gold Dollar, PR63
    Only 100 Examples Struck

1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase/McKinley PR63 PCGS. The Louisiana Purchase gold dollars were struck to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase in 1903. Two varieties were produced, one with a portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and the other with a bust of William McKinley. A special proof issue was produced, with 100 specimens of each design struck and affixed to cards that certified their authenticity and stated the circumstances of their manufacture. Because these proofs were distributed to officials of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and government insiders, rather than the collecting community, few examples have survived in unimpaired condition.

The present coin is an attractive Select specimen with well-detailed design elements and vibrant mint luster. The vivid orange-gold surfaces display highlights of lilac and show only minor signs of contact. Visual appeal is quite strong. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 6 in 63, 27 finer (8/13). (NGC ID# BYMG, PCGS# 7483)
