    1903 Louisiana Purchase/McKinley Gold Dollar, PR64
A Rarely Seen Proof Striking Limited to Only 100 Pieces

1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase/McKinley PR64 NGC. CAC. Only 100 proofs were struck of each of the McKinley and Jefferson types in 1903. According to Anthony Swiatek these pieces were struck for "the select" and they were all mounted on an imprinted card with a wax paper window, heavy string embedded in a dark red wax seal, and signed by the Mint Superintendent and Coiner. Few of these remain today. There is no doubt of the proof status of this piece. The fields have a depth of reflectivity that is impossible to find on Uncirculated coins struck from polished dies or polished planchets. There is little contrast evident between the fields and devices, which is consistent with the method of manufacture of proofs at this time. The surfaces have an even orange-gold color and slight haziness. The only marks of note are actually strike-throughs and a couple of planchet flakes in the right obverse field. A rare opportunity for the commemorative specialist. Census: 6 in 64, 5 finer (7/10).
