    1903 McKinley Gold Dollar, PR64
    Only 100 Pieces Struck

1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase/McKinley PR64 PCGS. CAC. To commemorate the centennial anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase, two gold dollar designs were struck, one with a portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and the other with a bust of William McKinley. Both coins had a large authorized mintage, but only about 17,500 pieces of each design were actually distributed in business-strike format. Another 100 examples of each design were struck in proof. The proofs were mostly distributed to government insiders and officials of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, rather than collectors. Proofs are seldom encountered today, as many were mishandled or spent by their non-numismatic owners.

The present coin is a sharply detailed Choice example, with frosty devices and deeply reflective fields. The pleasing yellow-gold surfaces show a few minor hairlines and contact marks, none worthy of individual mention. Eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 10 in 64, 17 finer (2/14). (NGC ID# BYMG, PCGS# 7483)
