1925 Norse-American Centennial, PR65
Octagonal Gold Medal

1925 Medal Norse American Centennial, Gold PR65 PCGS. Congress authorized the Philadelphia Mint to produce 40,000 Norse-American Centennial medals. Archival records show the production of 33,750 thick silver medals, 6,000 thin silver medals, 100 gold medals, and 60 large, silver-plated medals. Sales were less than anticipated. The actual distribution of the silver medals is unknown, although records suggest that 53 of the 100 gold medals were returned to the Mint and likely melted, leaving a distribution of just 47 examples. A recent detailed study of past auction appearances indicates that 31 gold medals survive in grades from PR67 to VF30. Both sides of this Gem proof exhibit a matte-like texture with lovely butter-gold surfaces and a few trivial, scattered copper toning spots. Population: 7 in 65 (1 in 65+), 6 finer (5/25).
