1925 Norse American Gold Medal, PR66
    Uninterrupted Provenance Since 1925
    Ex: Pittman

1925 Medal Norse Gold PR66 Matte NGC. Ex: Pittman. Identical designs appeared on the Norse American Centennial silver and gold medals. The 1.5 inch octagonal silver medals are known on thick and thin planchets, and they are popular with commemorative collectors. The Philadelphia Mint coined 6,000 on thin planchets and 31,750 on thick planchets.
The slightly smaller size 1 inch octagonal gold medals are known with matte proof surfaces. Just 100 were minted and 53 of those were later melted, leaving a net distribution of just 47 pieces. Only a few survivors remain for today's commemorative collectors.
John Jay Pittman purchased this beautiful yellow-gold matte proof in 1950. A tiny reverse edge nick above and right of the E in THE will mark the provenance to Pittman, and back to the Philadelphia Mint in 1925. Pittman acquired this piece from William T. Bartholomew, a former employee of the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia at the time these pieces were produced. Pittman's Thick and Thin Silver Norse medals are Lots 13251 and 13255 in this auction, and the winning bidder for this Norse Gold medal should look to those lots for the opportunity to keep the set together.
Ex: U.S. Mint, Philadelphia (1925); William T. Bartholomew (3/10/1950); John Jay Pittman (David Akers, 10/1997), lot 825.
