Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR63+ Cameo
Rare Snow-4 Die Variety, CAC Approved

1856 1C Flying Eagle, Snow-4, PR63+ Cameo PCGS. CAC. The key identifier of the Snow-4 variety is a pointed extension on the bottom of the U in UNITED and a small tine in the dentils beneath the right ribbon end. It has been several years since we last handled an example of this rare die variety. Rick Snow rates the die pair R.7, and has only traced 10 examples in all grades, including the present piece. Snow-4 was likely struck in mid-1858, as evidenced by the state of the reverse die, which was employed for the 1858 Small Letters proof issue. This Plus-designated CAC coin displays ample reflectivity in the fields with warm blond-gold, coppery, and pale rose-lilac hues. A full strike prevails throughout, and a few carbon spots on the lower obverse serve as pedigree markers.
