Rare 1856 Snow-1 Flying Eagle Cent, PR58

1856 1C PR58 PCGS. Snow-1, Low R.7. When Rick Snow did his early research, the Snow-1 in copper-nickel was considered extremely rare, with only two known. Others have been found since that time, and today about a dozen examples are believed to exist. The most important aspect of this variety is Snow's belief that they were the first 1856 Flying Eagle cents struck at the Mint that year. In addition to the dozen or so copper-nickel pieces, a small number of others are known in copper or bronze.
At www.indiancent.com, Snow provides a roster of the 12 known pieces including the following grades: PR64 (3); PR63; PR62; AU58 (2); AU55; XF45, and XF40. This piece appears to be a 13th example, as it is different from those in Snow's roster. It has light tan surfaces that are slightly deeper in the fields. A short line of ebony toning from the eagle's neck into the field will provide identification of this piece in past or future auction catalogs.(Registry values: N4719)
