Description

Pursued 1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR62

1856 1C PR62 PCGS. Snow-9. A fully struck example of this important and scarce issue. The mintage of the 1856 is only a fraction of any other small cent date. Initially a pattern, the 1856 was restruck in the late 1850s, with a majority of such pieces from Snow-9 dies. Nonetheless, the Guide Book estimates only a total of 2,000 1856 Flying Eagle cents were struck. The issue was essential to own for any self-respecting 19th century collector; a few numismatists made a specialty of it, accumulating more than 100 examples. The present coin features original apple-green, peach-red, and sun-gold toning. The fields are moderately reflective and display only occasional tiny marks.(Registry values: N4719)
