    Description

    1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR62
    Snow-9, Proof Striking

1856 1C PR62 PCGS. Snow-9. A lovely chocolate-brown representative of the famous introductory small cent, the rarest and lowest mintage date of the denomination. The Snow-9 variety was struck in the late 1850s and unofficially sold by the Mint to meet the growing demand from collectors. Profits went to improve the Mint cabinet, currently part of the Smithsonian collection. The present chocolate-brown specimen has a good strike and a high grade obverse. The reverse has two hair-thin horizontal marks above the NE in ONE and a narrow mark below the N in CENT. A slender strike-through (as coined) is noted at the right pendant of the T in UNITED. This same strike-through is present on many other Snow-9 cents, such as lot 5131 in our January 2014 FUN Signature.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 227A, PCGS# 2037)
