Description

Near-Gem Proof 1856 Flying Eagle Cent

1856 1C PR64 PCGS. Snow-9. A razor-sharp Choice specimen of this landmark numismatic issue. The moderately mirrored fields display almond-gold and ocean-blue patina. The field beneath the C in CENT is toned dusky tan-brown. Subtle laminations affect the E in ONE, the NT in CENT, the wreath ribbon, and the obverse border at 1 o'clock, but carbon and contact are virtually absent. The 1856 Flying Eagle is the introductory small cent, and is also the single rarest date of the its denomination. It has been the subject of strong collector demand since its introduction more than 150 years ago.
