Description

1856 Flying Cent Snow-9, PR65
Only Four CAC’d Finer

1856 1C PR65 PCGS. CAC. Die Stage early D/F. The 1856 Flying cent underwent two striking periods, occurring between 1856-1860. Rick Snow proposes that we can safely assume that Snow-9 belonged to the second striking period and somewhere between 1,000-1,500 proofs were struck, comprising of the Snow-2, Snow-4, and Snow-9 die pairings. Survivorship is then rather impressive, over 75%, with 1,564 coins reported between PCGS and NGC (5/26). Gem or better examples are conditionally scarce.
This example displays rich chocolate-brown hues with some minor red notes. The strike is exceptionally sharp and shows no points of weakness, as well as no marks that would obfuscate this appeal. Despite the impressive survivorship, finding a finer piece then the present example is an immensely difficult task with just five reported finer by PCGS and only four CAC'd finer (5/26). Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (#70 in 6th edition).
