Description

1856 Flying Cent, Snow-3, PR40
Low Mintage, Key Date

1856 1C Snow-3 PR40 PCGS. The 1856 flying cent had an incredibly low mintage compared to the next two years of circulation strikes of the design with just 2,000 pieces estimated distributed in the Guide Book. The initial mintage was struck to demonstrate the new copper-nickel small cent design to congress, while later restrikes were made to sell to collectors. Out of this low-mintage the Snow-3 represents a somewhat significant portion with estimates of 700 total pieces struck and 500 total survivor examples.
Light brown color adorns this coin with some deeper chocolate notes, though some mint-green verdigris is nestled within the reverse's devices. The strike is largely decent with circulation wear over the devices. This satisfactory piece represents a much more accessible coin for first-year collectors. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (#70 in 6th edition).
