Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR61
Scarcer Snow-3 Variety

1856 1C Snow-3 PR61 NGC. Repunching on the 5 in the date aids in identification of this scarcer 1856 Flying Eagle cent variety. Series authority Rick Snow suggests that no more than 700 examples of this variety were struck, with many of these coins making up at least most of the pieces that were distributed to Congress during the passage of the legislation that abolished the large cent and established the new small cent. Survivors from this die pair are estimated to comprise only about 20 percent of the total 1856 Flying Eagle cent population. The present piece is better-struck than most examples of Snow-3, with the eagle's tailfeathers well-delineated. Medium bronze-gold patina blankets each side, and the surfaces exhibit satiny mint luster. Some minor planchet irregularity is noted on the reverse from 7 to 1 o'clock, undetectable to the unaided eye.
