Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR61
Snow-3 Original Issue

1856 1C Snow-3 PR61 NGC. The Snow-3 variety is the second most often seen die pair for 1856 Flying Eagle cents, behind the Snow-9 proof restrikes. Snow-3's mintage is estimated between 500 and 700 pieces, and it likely represents the specific coins distributed to members of congress in 1856 to promote passage of the coinage bill establishing a nickel-alloy small cent coin. This is a pleasing lower-end example. Modestly reflective fields complement plum-brown and copper-orange patina across each side. Minor marks limit the grade, including a thin line in the obverse field above the eagle.
