Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, Snow-3, PR62
Old Green Label Holder

1856 1C Snow-3 PR62 PCGS. E.H. Adams, writing in the February-March 1908 volume of Thomas L. Elder's The Elder Magazine, stated:

"... though the flying eagle cent of 1856 is traditionally rare, it is by no means scarce, strictly speaking. Therein lies the most remarkable phase of this remarkable coin. Hundreds of 1856 cents are in existence, and there may be thousands. ... Yet the premium brought for a proof specimen of this cent at any of the auction sales held in recent years has rarely fallen below $12, and there is a record price of $16 given for a very fine specimen. Not satisfied with a single specimen, it has been the ambition of some collectors to obtain all they could."

The fervor that small cent collectors feel for the 1856 Flying Eagle remains strong today. The die varieties of this issue are among the most heavily studied of all small cents. This Snow-3 proof displays light recutting on the upright of the 5 in the date and has satiny surfaces with elements of gold and red emerging from overall tan-olive toning. The strike is sharp. Housed in an old green label holder.
