Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR62
Rare Snow-3 Proof

1856 1C Snow-3 PR62 PCGS. Most 1856 Flying Eagle cents are either Snow-3 business strike originals or Snow-9 proof restrikes, with the former rarer than the latter. Snow-3 cents were made for presentation to Washington officials, to demonstrate the reduced diameter of the small cent. Per Rick Snow, "nearly all examples seen show non-proof qualities such as weak breast feathers ... and rounded edges ... on the cotton leaves." But the present olive-green and lilac specimen has a full strike and reflective fields. It is unworn and nearly unabraded, all proof attributes. Scattered moderate carbon limits the grade. Pick-up points for Snow-3 are chiefly the date: the stand of the 5 is repunched, and the upright of the 1 is centered between dentils. The reverse is the High Leaves subtype and lacks a center dot. Certified in an old green label holder.
