Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR63
Snow-3, Original Striking

1856 1C Snow-3 PR63 PCGS. Though this coin is designated as a proof by PCGS, the Snow-3 variety is associated with original business strikes from 1856. Examples were given to Washington officials to demonstrate the new small cent. Many ended up in circulation, especially once 1857 and 1858 cents became plentiful. A majority of 1856 cents are Snow-9 proof restrikes, made circa-1859 to take advantage of the growing collector demand for the rare and historically significant issue. The present specimen was never spent and has acquired medium gold, olive, and gunmetal toning. The strike is crisp and the virtually unabraded fields are somewhat subdued. A partial wire rim is present on both sides. A lint mark resembling a sine wave on the eagle's leg provides an identifier.
