Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR64
Snow-3 Original, Well Struck

1856 1C Snow-3 PR64 PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal, card included. Snow-3 is one of the more plentiful 1856 Flying Eagle cent varieties, but it is not nearly as often seen as Snow-9 (the restrike die pair). In The Flying Eagle & Indian Cent Attribution Guide, third edition, Rick Snow writes that this die pair represents about 20% of all 1856 Flying Eagle cents seen, and that "it is nearly certain that this issue makes up most or all of the 634 specimens originally distributed to Congress to help promote passage of the pending coinage bill."

The present coin is the most attractive 1856 Flying Eagle cent of any variety that this cataloger has seen in recent memory. Soft, luminous surfaces are not truly prooflike, although design sharpness is exceptional. The originality of the surfaces showcases lovely mint-green, lavender, gold, and powder-blue hues in the fields, with no bothersome abrasions. The only hindrance on a higher grade seems to be a few faint flecks on the obverse field, only discernible with a loupe.
