Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR65
Snow-3, Eagle Eye Photo Seal

1856 1C Snow-3 PR65 NGC. Eagle Eye Photo Seal, card not included. Although designated as a proof by NGC, Snow-3 is the die pair most often associated with the 634 pieces struck in 1856 for distribution to Washington officials. Those coins were business strikes per Rick Snow, although he also believes additional examples were struck in proof format. A majority of Snow-3 cents show evidence of circulation, but the present satiny Gem is mark-free, fully struck, and nearly devoid of carbon. A trace of flan granularity, as made, is noted near the eagle's head and wingtip. Both sides display a partial wire rim. An outstanding Gem that would provide the cornerstone of any collection of small cents.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2016), lot 3017, where it brought $42,300.
