1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR64
Snow-4, Rare in Any Grade
Low Leaves Reverse
1856 1C Snow-4 PR64 PCGS. Snow-4 features the Pointed U in
UNITED and a Low Leaves reverse that was first employed in 1858.
Diagnostic die lines appear in the dentils directly below the right
ribbon end. According to Rick Snow: "This die was used on the 1858
Small Letter proof Flying Eagle (PR2) in the same die state as
found on this issue, leading to the conclusion that they were
struck at nearly the same time, most likely near the middle of
1858." Only 10 examples of this rare die marriage are listed in
Snow's census, where a single PR65 coin is graded higher than this
near-Gem. However, PCGS reports two Gem examples within a certified
population of 10 pieces at that service. The variety is decidedly
rare. Each side of this piece exhibits an array of violet and
steel-blue accents amid glowing golden-brown and copper-orange
color. Flashy and strongly struck with minimal evidence of
contact.Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2020), lot 3014.
