Description
1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR63
Snow-9, Small Cent Date
PCGS Old Green Holder
1856 1C Snow-9 PR63 PCGS. Die State E/E, exhibiting a die
crack from the beak up through UNI to the rim, and two small die
cracks on the reverse. Snow-9 is one of the restrikes produced
between late 1857 and 1860 to supply collector demand for the rare
debut small cent issue. Snow-9 is the most common variety seen, and
while it typically displays characteristics consistent with
traditional proofs, the variety often contains striking defects and
lacks deeply mirrored fields. This luminous PR63 displays sharp devices and, as noted above, it has satiny rather than mirrored fields. Chestnut-gold surfaces cover most of this example alongside small areas of original mint-copper. Faint hues of lavender, sea-green and yellow-gold float through the fields, and a few spots of russet on the obverse serve as pedigree markers. Light contact marks are trivial and grade consistent. Housed in a PCGS Generation 3.1 green label holder, and listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (#70 in 6th edition).
